Injury news: Chelsea captain forced off against Leicester

Chelsea captain Gary Cahill limped off the pitch with a hamstring problem in the first-half of the side’s clash with Leicester on Saturday 13 January at the Stamford Bridge.

Cahill started alongside Antonio Rudiger at Stamford Bridge but pulled up with a hamstring twinge in the 33rd minute and was replaced by Andreas Christensen before the teams headed down the tunnel with the scoreline at. There was no place for David Luiz in Antonio Conte‘s starting XI but the Brazilian was named among Chelsea substitutes against the Foxes.

Luiz, who was involved in a training ground bust-up with Conte back in November, has struggled for game-time in recent months and is being linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge this January. The defender made his first start since November 22 in Chelsea’s goalless Carabao Cup clash with Norwich last weekend.

Cahill’s injury could give the centre-back a chance to work his way back into Conte’s first-team plans. It’s understood Arsenal have expressed an interest in signing Luiz in recent weeks and Real Madrid is also keeping tabs on the Brazilian’s situation.
