Etoile Du Sahel and Tunisia captain, Aymen Mathlouthi, took over the mantle from Denis Onyango as the new Caf best goalkeeper at a colourful awards ceremony in Ghana’s capital Accra on Thursday.
For the first time, Caf left the CAF best team of the year for the fans to vote their favourites on social media platforms.
The Tunisian keeper was up against Ayman Majid (FUS Rabat and Morocco) and Denis Onyango who was earlier named the World Cup qualifiers (CAF) and CAF Champions League best goalkeeper.
Onyango started the social media campaign well by winning 50% of the 6,605 votes casted on the CAF English Twitter handle.
Majid beat Onyango closely on the Arab handle, scooping 39% (3224) of the 8,267 votes cast; Onyango garnered 37% (3,058) while Mathlouthi got 25% (2067).
Overall –including facebook votes- the Tunisian captain collected 16,500 while Majid and Onyango came third and fourth with 16,400 and 11,400 votes.
