Time for Memphis to explode
When Memphis Depay left PSV Eindhoven six months ago, there was only one thing in his mind-to become the next superstar at Old Trafford. This was crystal clear in his first interview after joining the Red Devils where he declared that he was going to let my feet speak.

-I hope I can develop here in the Premier League and I hope I can be like those great legends one time in my career. I’m going to work hard, so let’s see. I believe I can be a great player for Manchester United.”

Tougher than anticipated?

However, the journey to stardom is tougher than he thought. The 21-year-old has shown only glimpses of the quality that saw him become the most coveted young talent in the world two years ago. He scored 22 league goals, helping PSV win the Dutch Eredivisie.  The youngest Dutchman to score a goal at the World Cup provided the spark that sent the 20-time English champions into the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup.

Louis van Gaal’s men had struggled to break down a well-organized Sheffield United, League One outfit, and desperately needed the ingenuity of the heavily tattooed Dutchman. Memphis breathed life into the match, running into defenders and was fouled inside the box before Wayne Rooney converted from the spot. The £31 million man has been in and out of the starting XI this season and this has been down to his inconsistency.

Depay can produce a man-of-the-match display in one match only to be peripatetic in the next. Although Van Gaal warned Manchester United fans that youngsters tend to be inconsistent, I fail to understand why his compatriot is struggling so much. Guus Hiddink, talking after Chelsea’s 3-0 win at Crystal Palace attempted to explain.

Hard work and consistency

-And if you think you can do it just on your quality, what’s more given by talent than nature, then this league will kill you, he said.

I am from the school of thought that the United no. 7 is not a hard worker. I hate it when he does not track back whenever the team loses the ball. He was at fault for the first goal at Stoke City but he still is a very technically gifted player. However, what the former Bayern Munich manager needs right now is 100% quality and grit. The fans want him to score goals, produce moments of magic but with more regularity.

I think it is time we see the real Memphis explode! Or he will be the added the list of many players who were unable to live up to the demands of the no. 7 jersey.
